Evening

6:00–8:00 PM β€” Brown Dog Pizza, 110 E Colorado Ave, downtown Telluride. Totally informal: drop in whenever, grab a slice, meet the people you'll be following up a mountain this weekend. No agenda, no reservation.

Thursday Β· September 24, 2026

Warm-up day β€” two groups, same trails, lunch in Ouray

Meet9:30 AM
Roll10:00 AM

Easier trails to shake down the trucks, get everyone used to running in a group, and sort out any gremlins before the big alpine days. Both groups run the same route with staggered starts. Nothing today requires armor or lockers β€” if you're on street tires you'll be fine, just tell your lead so they can keep an eye on you.

Route β€” run in this order

  • 1. Last Dollar Road [Easy]
aspen corridor, easy grades, good warm-up
    ~21 mi one-way Β· 1.5–2.5 hours
    GPS: 37.953220,-107.894887
  • 2. Lunch in Ouray

Imogene β€” all three groups

Meet8:00 AM
Roll8:30 AM

Change of plan: no route rotation. All three groups run Imogene Pass (13,114 ft) and the Yankee Boy spurs, with staggered starts, each on its own channel. Arrive with at least 70% β€” charge overnight, there's nothing up there. Lunch is on the trail again: pack food, water and layers, and download your maps. Same groups and channels as Friday. Prefer a slow morning? A relaxed track led by Mike Bergren meets at the Mountain Village Superchargers at noon β€” options are the Ames power generation plant out to Rico and back, or the waterfall up the back side of Bear Creek Pass on the Telluride side. No sign-up, just show up.

Route β€” run in this order

  • 1. Imogene Pass [Difficult]
over the top, 13,114 ft Β· trail start on Tomboy Road out of Telluride

Sunday Β· September 27, 2026

Black Bear β€” three ways

Meet8:00 AM
Roll8:30 AM

The signature Telluride run to close the weekend. Mountain Village Superchargers, same spot as every morning β€” gather 8:00, roll out 8:30, charge overnight. We get over via Ophir Pass rather than driving around on the highway: cross Ophir to the Silverton side, then up US-550 to the Black Bear trail start at the top of Red Mountain Pass. Three ways to do the day, so pick one and tell us at the briefing: (1) the full run, start to finish over the 12,840-ft summit, into Ingram Basin above Bridal Veil Falls and down the one-way switchbacks into downtown Telluride; (2) up to the top of Black Bear with us and turn around there β€” the summit and the views without the switchback descent, the easier way to do the day, and nobody's counting; (3) ride along with someone else and leave your truck in Telluride. Groups and running order get sorted at the morning briefing. Most people head out Sunday evening.

Black Bear Pass β€” the signature Telluride descent

Ophir Pass over to the Silverton side (11,789 ft), then US-550 up to the Black Bear trail start at the top of Red Mountain Pass Β· full run: 12,840-ft summit, Ingram Basin above Bridal Veil Falls, then the one-way switchbacks down into town Β· summit-and-turnaround and ride-along both welcome.

  • Ophir Pass [Moderate]
~12 mi one-way Β· 1.5–2 hours Β· CT Capable β€” narrow shelf, mind the width
  • Black Bear Pass [Difficult]
~12 mi one-way (Red Mountain Pass β†’ Telluride) Β· 3–5 hours Β· Full-size rigs strongly discouraged on the switchbacks

Emergency & Recovery

Search and rescue is for people, not vehicles β€” a stuck truck is not a SAR mission. Life or limb, call 911. Vehicle only, work down the recovery list. Tesla Roadside is requested from the bottom of the Tesla app home screen, but note Tesla states it may decline restricted-access areas, so it should not be your only trail plan.

Life safety β€” injury, medical, missing person

911

Ouray non-emergency dispatch (WestCO)

(970) 249-9110

San Miguel County Sheriff (Telluride)

(970) 728-1911

Ouray County Sheriff

(970) 325-7272

Trail recovery β€” Rosie's Hookers Alpine Recovery, Ouray

(970) 596-5133
Specializes exclusively in 4x4 San Juan recoveries. Alt number on one listing: (970) 318-0047.

Colorado 4x4 Rescue & Recovery β€” free, 24/7

(720) 722-1204
Nonprofit, never charges. Denver-based, so same-day at best β€” backup, not rapid response.

No cell signal

Assume no service on the high passes. iPhone 14 or later supports Emergency Text via Satellite β€” you must be outside with a clear view of the sky. Set up your Medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app before you head up; you can’t do it off-grid.
If comms fail, ride out to US-550 (Ouray↔Silverton) or CO-145 (Telluride↔Ophir) where coverage resumes.

Trail Essentials

Gear

Recovery boards, tow strap, air compressor, tire deflator, basic tools β€” bring what you have. Between the group we’ll have plenty.

Recovery points

Locate and confirm your own truck’s recovery points before the trail, and know that a Cybertruck generally wants a flatbed rather than a wheel-lift. Tell any operator β€œapproximately 7,000 lb full-size EV pickup, needs heavy-duty flatbed” and let them size the equipment.

Layers

Cold at 11,000+ ft in the morning, warm by noon. The high passes make their own weather β€” an early snow can close an access road with no notice.

Maps offline

Download your maps and save the trailhead pins above before you leave town. Cell service disappears fast once you’re over the passes.

Charging

Mountain Village Supercharger is home base: 8 stalls at 250 kW, upper level of the Gondola Parking Garage. None of the campgrounds have hookups β€” if you’re camping, plan on charging in Mountain Village.
